Support Groups
Christ Church recognizes that healing happens when you have the support of family and friends. Therefore, we are pleased to be able a variety of support groups to members and non-members alike. Some of these groups are run by Christ Church; others are outside groups. All meet at the church itself.
Hospital Visits
Christ Church pastors and lay ministers bring the love of Christ to church members and family who are hospitalized. If you would like to help, or if you know or someone who would appreciate a visit while in the hospital, please contact Rev. Linda Summers Pierce.
Al-Anon
If your life has been affected by someone else’s drinking, there is hope. Al-Anon meets here at Christ Church Mondays from 12:30-1:30 pm in Room 309. Al-Anon is an anonymous fellowship. Contact Renee Teel for more information.
Dementia Caregiver Support
A support group for caregivers and others affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is being offered here at the church. The group is designed to provide a forum for family members and friends of people with dementia to share feelings, concerns and information and to support each other in coping with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Contact Jane Relton at 281-313-2500 for more information.
This ministry offers hope and healing to adults and children affected by divorce or separation. The Divorce Care program takes a biblical approach to divorce, separation, and related issues such as forgiveness, reconciliation, loneliness, and the effect of divorce on children and families. It also emphasizes that healing should begin with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Please see our Family Ministries section for more information.
Grief Support Group
Dealing with the death of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult and stressful experiences. Many people find it helps to meet in a safe and supportive atmosphere with others who understand. CUMC regularly offers a five-week seminar/support group led by two facilitators. Contact Mary Kay Moore at 281-261-8459 for more information.
Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministry is grounded in Jesus’ command to love one another. Through one-on-one caring relationships, those who are hurting receive the love and care they need for support.
Stephen Ministers are recruited and trained to help provide Christian caregiving to members of our congregation and community. They complete 50 hours of training before beginning a confidential, one-to-one relationship with a care receiver. They initially commit to serve for two years after training and some choose to renew their commitment.
CanCare
Christ Church cancer support ministry provides a broad range of practical and spiritual support to cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and family members. In 2004 Christ Church became a member congregation of CanCare of Houston, an interfaith cancer support ministry rooted in the religious community.
The mission of CanCare is to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors and their families. It was founded in 1990 and today includes over 70 congregations, 6 hospitals and 10 business partners. CanCare recruits and trains volunteer survivors and caregivers who work one-on-one with cancer patients and their families to offer long term support.
Volunters are matched to referrals according to cancer type, age, gender and family situation. Referrals to the Cancer Support Ministry are strictly confidential. Contact Rev. Linda Summers Pierce, or Trisha Rostek.
Christ Church library offers a variety of books related to cancer treatments, nuitrition, and aids to living with cancer.
Life Books Ministry teaches scrapbooking to cancer patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center in order to celebrate their life and give a gift that lives on for generations. Contact Gael Bittenbender.
