Disciple Frequently Asked Questions

Please look below and see if your questions are answered...

What is a Disciple Bible Study?

Disciple is an in-depth, discussion based Bible study. The word "Disciple" in the Bible is connected with instruction and training, as well as the common meaning today of being "a follower". In Disciple Bible Study, you will learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. You will also be challenged to take what you learn and apply it to your daily life. The goal of your study is to become a closer follower of Christ.

What happens at the weekly group meeting?

Each week, you will have a short introductory video featuring a Bible scholar. You will have group discussion of what you read during the week. Sometimes the entire group discusses a question. At other times, you will discuss in smaller groups.

When does the next class start?

Classes start in August each year.

Are there any prerequisites?

There are no prerequisite classes for Disciple I. Many participants have not studied the Bible before taking this class. You need to have an interest in learning more about what is in the Bible. and are ready to be commit to weekly meetings for 34 weeks. For those that have been in other Bible studies, we encourage you to read each week as if reading for the first time, looking for new insights.

Anyone who has completed Disciple I can take any other Disciple class, in any order.

When do groups meet?

We try to offer classes on Sunday evenings, a weekday evening, and a weekday morning. The specific schedule will be available in July.

How many people are in a group?

Groups are small, with 10 to 16 in a group. This allows for everyone to participate in discussion, and for people to get to know each other.

What kind of commitment is expected of me?

A high level of commitment is expected of participants.

  • Prepare for the group meeting by daily reading and taking notes, 30 to 40 minutes each day.
  • Be present every week for the 2 1/2 hour group meeting, but faithful to study if absent
  • Participate in every session by both listening and discussing
  • Keep an atmosphere of trust, openness, and confidentiality
  • Arrive and end on time
  • Pray daily for your group members

Who teaches disciple?

No one "teaches" the class; there are leaders who facilitate group discussions. Disciple is a discussion-based study, not a lecture. Group members learn from each other, as they participate in discussion of the Bible reading they have done that week. The leaders guide the discussion with questions from a leaders' manual. The leaders prepare each week as participants in the study, by reading and taking notes, and participate in the discussion along with other group members. Leaders have all completed Disciple I, as well a attended training to prepare them for their leadership role.
