Disaster Relief
We are involved in a variety of disaster relief efforts from our support of UMCOR and the assembling of medicine boxes and flood buckets to our hands-on relief efforts.
Flood Buckets / Medicine Boxes
Flood bucket supplies and/or specific medical supplies and funds are collected and forwarded to UMCOR or used in local emergency response programs.
A Flood Bucket contains the basic cleaning materials to allow people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood or hurricane. It includes cleaning materials, trash bags, insect repellent, etc. If you would like to make a flood bucket, please use the complete supply list. Because the items must fit inside the bucket, if you cannot find the specified size, please use a smaller size, not a larger one. You can also donate by notating "flood buckets" in a check made out to CUMC. The cost of one flood bucket is approximately $55.
A Medicine Box contains 18 essential drugs and medical supplies. The box contents are sufficient to provide a community of about 1,000 people with basic medicines and supplies for three months. It provides necessary items for day-to-day treatment of common ailments that plague people of all ages, from infants to adults. Many clinics and hospitals around the world do not have basic medicines available on a regular basis. Medicine Boxes help fill this gap.

Hurricane Ike Relief
Does God place an urging on your heart when you watch the TV and witness the aftermath of a disaster? If so, then serving in this ministry is for you and there are so many different ways to serve. Look at all the ways that Jesus’ love was expressed by the people of Christ United Methodist Church during the Hurricane Ike Relief effort…
- Since we had electricity, we held a community wide dinner each night and fed 1000 over the course of the week.
- During those evenings, we opened the chapel and provided Prayer Partners and had rooms for internet hook up and cell phone recharging
- Distributed ice at POD in Sugar Land
- Held a supply drive for needed items at Red Cross Shelters
- Coordinated with City of Sugar and the Texas Conference office and sent teams for debris/tree clearing/home repair for elderly and others in need
- Sent a team led by Pastor Morris to Galveston at 2:30 am to assist Pastor Burt Palmer with Bear Creek UMC with water distribution
- Provided volunteers for Hurricane Bag distribution at East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry
- Supplemented volunteers and Stephen ministers for shift duties at the FUMC Red Cross shelter
- Held a diaper, formula, underwear drive for Anahuac – WOW!
- Provided 50 cots with blankets and sheet sets to San Leon
- Sent a team to BayVue Church on Bolivar Peninsula to help clear debris and clean the muck out
- Trained Early Responder Teams to have volunteers that are equipped to enter a disaster site soon after one strikes. ER Teams provide a Christian presence in bringing immediate assistance to hurting people.
